Splash: neuflow
Full size: 1920x1200
Software used: Xenodream 1.5 / Maya / mentalray / Photoshop
I created a couple of holons (the objects that create the fractals in xenodream) and applied a metamorph to both of them. Using the mesh export in Xenodream I was able to save the fractal as an *.obj. It's an awesome feature of xenodream and I haven't seen any other fractal software that does this.
I imported the obj into maya, which was huge by the way... around 450+ MB and 6 million polygons. Amazingly my computer was able to handle it (i7 860 CPU w/ 8GB of RAM). I could've optimized the object in xenodream by lowering the triangulation, but decided not to. I love rendering and lighting and I couldn't wait to start.
A couple of physical area lights and a simple mia_material shader plus an ambient occlusion pass did the job! Took it into Photoshop, added a background, some texture, some text and finito! Total rendering time was less than 5 minutes @ production setting in mental ray. Total time from start to finish was about a couple of hours. What took the longest was choosing the right colors and lighting setup
